Our name workshop
About Nameidea
Nameidea is a name inspiration workshop for character writing, family stories and fresh starts. We help you browse real surnames, try them in context and compare a shortlist.

Where do the names come from?
Our source is the 2010 U.S. Census surname data, which covers surnames recorded at least 100 times in that census. We imported the first 3,000 records, then curated 500 last name ideas by spelling length and 400 family names by initial. Collections may overlap; their counts do not represent 900 distinct names.
How are names presented?
Spelling length and initial are browsing categories, not claims about cultural origin. Census rank and frequency describe that dataset, not current or worldwide popularity. We do not infer ancestry or meanings from a surname. The sampler chooses existing entries; scenes and family notes are fictional previews.
Who maintains this workshop?
Nameidea is the publisher and maintains the collections, presentation and source references. Contact Nameidea to report a spelling, reference or website issue. The dates on our pages reflect content updates, not new Census data.
What stays in your browser?
Saved surnames are kept locally, and first-name drafts stay in page memory. No account is needed. Read our privacy notice and terms of use for the current service details.
